SURYA

The Sun-God described as the offspring of Aditi in all the Puranas, is known also by the name Aditya. Life, on earth, depends on the Sun’s bounty and benevolence, for all living begins to derive their energy and substance from the Sun. The most sacred Vedic hymn, the Gayatri is an invocation to the Sun-God and His peerless glory. He is eulogized as having the grandeur of Brahma and of all the God’s in the pantheon. Yet, He can be propitiated by chanting the Gayatri or the Aditya-Hridayam and offering prostrations before Him at Sun-rise.

CHANDRA

The moon is looked upon as the incarnation of Brahma Deva and is universally accepted as the presiding deity of the mind. Sound mental health is thus within the purview of the moon.

Afflictions and aberrations of the mind and even lunacy can be cured by means of loving worship offered to Moon God.

CHOVVA

Kuja is an evil planet inclined to mischief. Yet, if he is kept in good humour by means of prayer and worship he is liberal in granting the devotees strength of mind to manfully bear all calamities and come out of them unharmed. Similarly, he gives enough good sense to people in prosperity. Rulers, administrators and those who seek power and influence invoke his grace through prayer and worship.

BUDHA

Budha is the presiding deity of learning. Those who seek success in education, scholarship and learning invoke his blessing. Left to himself, Budha is an auspicious planet, but in conjunction with the evil ones, his power to do harm is prodigious. Those desirous of distinction in the fields of letters of learning, arts and education will do well to worship Budha.

VYAZHAM

This planetary deity-is knew also by the name Brihaspati, by virtue of his greatness as the preceptor of the Gods and the sages. God’s grace and happiness in the worlds hereafter depend upon his goodwill. Success in any undertaking is certain if he is favourably inclined. By nature, Guru is quick-tempered and easily irritable; but he is also pleased equally easily in which case he confers boons and blessing on mankind with profuse prodigality.

SUKRA

By birth, Sukra is half divine and half demonic. He was elevated to the position of a planet at birth. Sukra is the preceptor of the demons and is the arbiter of man’s happiness and prosperity in this world. Like Guru, Sukra is a deity of changing moods-lavish in conferring happiness when pleased and drowning men in misery when displeased. Therefore, the best course for the attainment of worldly happiness and success is to propitiate Sukra with prayers and worship.

SANI

This planet is often spoken of as-inauspicious as Sani is capable of casting a shadow on human life. He is the presiding deity of misery and misfortune. However, he hastens to bless his devotees with great happiness and wisdom when he is pleased with their offering of prayer and worship

RAHU

Rahu is a demon and therefore an evil planet inclined to bring misfortune And misery to mankind. The legend has that he managed some how to revoke Lord Vishnu’s compassion by which he was elevated to the position of a planet. He is invisible, a shadow. Yet, the Lord ordinated that the malevolent God be offered worship so that he could be kept in good humour and kept out of his tendency of playing mischief with the people.

KETHU

This planet is, in fact, the Comet identified as the Son of Brahma-Deva, the distinction being that the 33 Comets known to astrology are the sons of Rahu. By nature, Ketu is the amalevolent planet but he showers happiness on men when pleased.
